According to an IDC report, the PC microprocessor market has started 2011 with quite a bang, seeing Q1 shipments go up both sequentially (by 1.6%) and on-year (by 7.4%). This increase benefited all three major players who managed to retain their market shares.

Overall, in Q1 Intel had a 80.8% share, while AMD and VIA secured 18.9% and 0.2%, respectively. This past quarter Intel made gains in the mobile processor segment (86.3% share) and slipped in desktop (72.4%) and server/workstation (93.9), whereas AMD managed the opposite and grabbed 18.9%, 27.4% and 6.1% in said areas.

Due to the higher-than-expected results of Q1, IDC has upped its forecast for 2011, from a processor unit growth of 10.1% to 10.3%.
