iphone5Earlier this week, The Wall Street Journal's AllthingsD.com web site reported that Apple's press event to introduce the long awaited iPhone 5 smartphone will be happening on October 4. It's a date that Apple itself still hasn't officially confirmed yet, but AllthingsD.com is sticking to its guns about the October 4 timeline. Now the same web site is reporting via unnamed sources that the iPhone 5 press event will be held at Apple's main campus, located in Cupertino, California.

Why is this significant? Because, if this is true, it represents a change of pace for Apple press events. Normally the company holds such media pow-wows in downtown San Francisco. All of the previous iPhone press events were held in the city as well as both iPad launch events. The article doesn't seem to know why Apple has decided to hold the iPhone 5 launch at its own offices but it speculates that the ever shifting release date of the iPhone 5 may have made it hard to reserve a space in San Francisco to hold the launch event.

Mac TrojanMalware continues to be a minimal threat to most Mac users, but that doesn't mean attackers aren't constantly trying to come up with new ways to steal information or turn users' machines into botnet drones. The latter appears to be the case with a new Mac trojan posing as a PDF file, discovered by security researchers at F-Secure.

The malware in question has been identified as Trojan-Dropper:OSX/Revir.A, which installs a backdoor, Backdoor:OSX/Imuler.A, onto the user's Mac. Currently, however, the backdoor doesn't communicate with anything.

IcloudDuring the keynote address at Monday's Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled iCloud, Apple's new wireless data sync service for iOS devices, Macs, and PCs.

"Some people think the cloud is just a hard disk in the sky," Job told the attendees. "We think it's way more than that. And we call it iCloud."

The free iCloud takes the place of Apple's $99-a-year MobileMe service, which Jobs admitted, "wasn't our finest hour." Like MobileMe, iCloud offers the ability to sync contacts, calendars, and mail across devices. Create a new contact on your iPhone, for example, and it gets automatically pushed to the cloud and syncs to all of your devices and computers.
